So I got a voicemail this morning from someone claiming to be from the Law Offices of David J. Fuller. They said it was "urgent" and to call them back about a legal matter. I haven't answered yet because I'm not sure if this is legit or just a scare tactic.
A little background – I do have some old debt from a few years ago when I lost my job. I'm pretty sure it's past the statute of limitations in my state, but I'm not 100% sure. I've been trying to get back on my feet and honestly can't afford a lawsuit or wage garnishment right now.
I looked up their office and saw they have a location in North Andover, MA, and also one in California. That seemed a little odd to me. Has anyone else been contacted by them? How did you handle it?
I've read online that you can request debt validation to make them prove they actually own the debt and that the amount is correct. I'm thinking about sending them a letter asking for that, but I'm nervous that might just make them sue me faster.
Also, does anyone know if they actually follow through with lawsuits or if they just threaten people? I work a regular hourly job and I'm terrified of my wages being garnished. I've heard some income like Social Security or disability is protected, but that doesn't apply to me.
If anyone has dealt with this firm before, please share your experience. Did you negotiate a payment plan? Did you fight it in court? I'm just trying to figure out my next step without making things worse.
Thanks for reading – any advice is appreciated.
