Hi everyone,
I've been sorting my household waste more carefully lately, but I end up mixing up about the plastic food storage bags. We have a variety of bags for sandwiches, leftovers, vegetables and freezer storage purposes each week. There are also thin, flexible or sturdier zipper models. I am not certain on how to get rid of all these bags.
I asked the question: Are Plastic Food Storage Bags Recyclable?. There are materials listed as being recyclable for certain plastic films which may or may not be collected in regular curbside recycling programs. This makes it challenging to determine how to dispose of used bags.
I would be grateful for some advice about a couple of things:
Is it possible to recycle regular sandwich and zipper bags?
For 2, do the bags have to be washed and dried prior to handing them in to a collection center?
3. Can plastic bags be accepted that contained food with oil or sticky substances?
4. Does the zipper seal have to be removed from the rest of the bag?
6. What facilities are there for recycling flexible plastic packages?
Contamination is another issue. I know that food scraps can contaminate the recycling process; I don't want to put the rubbish in with recyclables. I don't know how often these bags should be cleaned, though, or if some kinds are just meant to be tossed into the trash.
Also my efforts are made to recycle appropriate food packaging bags which are clean and undamaged! However, I am aware of bags that could not be re-used if they were used for raw meat or certain dirty foods.
Have someone with experience in recycling plastic food storage bags please share with me what you do. Are there any collection points for your supermarket, specialist recycling facilities, or local waste programs?
I would like to know how to handle these bags simply and effectively without adding to the recycling issues. Thank you for your assistance!
